Set And Communicate Career Goals

Be goal oriented. Before the start of the new year, sit down with your boss to discuss your professional goals. Be open about where you see yourself after 6 months or a year. A good boss will help and guide you to achieve these goals by giving you opportunities to grow and support to keep you on track to progress.

Always Be A Team Player

Bosses and employers don’t like when employees are focused on “I” rather than “We.” They want team players who are dedicated to helping the greater good of the team, which ultimately is beneficial for the company

A good employee volunteers his/her effort before even being asked. They volunteer for more assignments and responsibility, and not simply because of immediate reward. This kind of employees simply goes above and well beyond and will be the first choice when promotions are being decided.

Keep Learning

Show your boss and organization that you’re committed to continuously enhancing and developing your skills by finding learning opportunities, both within the organization and outside of it. This doesn’t mean you need to do your Masters or Ph.D. unless that’s related to your job. Instead, enroll in one webinar every month, spend your own money to attend conferences, or ask to be put on projects which are not related to your department. This indicates that you’re serious about your career, and aren’t waiting for someone else to get you where you want to reach.

Do Not Be Afraid To Take Charge

Do you reflect passion, trustworthiness, decisiveness, and confidence? Possessing these types of leadership skills is critical for getting promoted. After all, the first step in being a leader is behaving like one. Don’t get involved in office politics or develop bad qualities, like being late or missing deadlines. Leaders are supposed to be great role models for the employees they manage and work with, and without these criteria, it will be difficult to get a management promotion.
